Happy Monday! Since most of us are practicing social distancing, I felt now would be a great time to launch the Black Lady Law Brunch and Book Club blog! In keeping with our name, our first post will be some of our favorite books that are keeping us busy in these strange days.
“In Brown’s Wake: Legacies of America’s Educational Landmark” by Martha Minow (recommended by Chisom)
If there are any other educators [reading this blog], I’d recommend it
Chisom
“Fire and Desire” by Brenda Jackson (recommended by Chisom)
Chisom recommends “Fire and Desire” for anyone who hasn’t started reading Brenda Jackson yet
Alyssa
“Pachinko” by Min Jin Lee (recommended by Tashay)
Pachinko is such a great book if you haven’t read it.
Tashay
“Men We Reaped” by Jesmyn Ward (recommended by Mayowa)
This book ripped my whole soul out and put it back together.
Janelle
“The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom” (recommended by Amirah)
This one is particular favorite of ours and was recommended by Morgan’s Aunt Tracey too!
Alyssa

“Homegoing” by Yaa Gyasi (recommended by Janelle)
Homegoing was another popular choice in the group chat and several of us are reading it currently
Alyssa
“Swing Time” by Zadie Smith (recommended by Janelle)
“A great read”
Janelle
“The Warmth of Other Suns” by Isabelle Wilkerson (recommended by Tashay)
I highly recommend this book! I basically started reading it because I wanted to know why there aren’t many black people in some areas but a ton in others. It’s so interesting to learn about the personal stories behind the great migration.
Tashay
“Educated” by Tara Westover (recommended by Tashay)
“You’re in for a ride. It’s rough but so good.”
Tashay
“On Intersectionality : Essential Writings” by Kimberlé Crenshaw (recommended by Inikki)
I also think Crenshaw’s original piece on intersectionality should be required reading.
Inikki
“Around the Way Girl” by Taraji P. Henson (recommended by Tracey Bing)
“Americanah” by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie (recommended by Tracey Bing)
I can’t wait to read Americanah after Around the Way Girl.
Tracey Bing
